What is the Book of 2 Peter about?

2 Peter is a letter from "Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 1:1). He encourages believers to grow, adding to their faith virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity (2 Peter 1:5–7). He recalls being with Jesus in the holy mount when a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son" (2 Peter 1:17), and says holy men spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Chapter 2 warns against false teachers and recalls how God judged the angels that sinned, the world of Noah's day, and Sodom and Gomorrha. In chapter 3 Peter answers scoffers who ask where the promise of Christ's coming is. He explains that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years (2 Peter 3:8), that God is patient, not willing that any should perish, and that the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night (2 Peter 3:10).
