Absalom was the third son of King David, born in Hebron to Maacah (2 Samuel 3:3). No one in all Israel was praised as much for his beauty, and when he cut his thick hair each year it weighed two hundred shekels (2 Samuel 14:25–26). After his half brother Amnon wronged his sister Tamar, Absalom waited two years and had Amnon killed at a sheep-shearing feast (2 Samuel 13:28–29). He then fled to Geshur for three years.
Back in Jerusalem, Absalom sat by the city gate and "stole the hearts of the men of Israel" (2 Samuel 15:6). He declared himself king in Hebron, and David fled the city. In the battle in the wood of Ephraim, Absalom's head caught in an oak as his mule ran on (2 Samuel 18:9), and Joab killed him. David wept, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son" (2 Samuel 18:33).
