Who were Ahab and Jezebel?
Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria for twenty-two years and did more evil than all the kings before him (1 Kings 16:29–30). He married Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and served Baal, building him an altar in Samaria (1 Kings 16:31–32). The prophet Elijah announced a drought, and later called down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel before the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:38). Jezebel then swore to kill Elijah, and he fled (1 Kings 19:2–3).
When Naboth refused to sell Ahab his vineyard, Jezebel wrote letters in Ahab's name, hired false witnesses and had Naboth stoned (1 Kings 21:1–16). Elijah announced judgment on them both (1 Kings 21:19–23). Ahab died in battle at Ramoth-gilead, struck by an arrow shot "at a venture" (1 Kings 22:34–37). Years later Jezebel was thrown from a window at Jehu's command (2 Kings 9:33).
