Who was Stephen?
Stephen was one of seven men chosen by the early church in Jerusalem to oversee the daily care of widows, described as "a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost" (Acts 6:5). He did great wonders and miracles among the people (Acts 6:8). His opponents could not resist his wisdom, so they brought false witnesses who accused him of speaking against Moses and the temple. All in the council saw his face "as it had been the face of an angel" (Acts 6:15).
In a long speech Stephen retold Israel's history from Abraham to Moses and Solomon's temple (Acts 7:2–50), then accused his hearers of resisting the Holy Ghost. He saw heaven opened and Jesus standing at the right hand of God (Acts 7:56). They stoned him outside the city, laying their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul (Acts 7:58). Stephen prayed, "Lord, lay not this sin to their charge" (Acts 7:60).
