What is the Book of 1 Chronicles about?

1 Chronicles is the thirteenth book of the Bible. Its first nine chapters trace family lines from Adam through the tribes of Israel. Among the names is Jabez, who asked God to bless him and enlarge his coast, "And God granted him that which he requested" (1 Chronicles 4:10).

The rest of the book focuses on King David. After Saul's death David becomes king and takes Jerusalem, and his mighty men are listed with their brave deeds. When the ark is first moved, Uzza dies for touching it (1 Chronicles 13:9–10). Later the Levites carry it into the city with music and joy. God promises David a lasting house (1 Chronicles 17:11–14) but says his son will build the temple. David gathers gold, silver and materials, organizes the priests, Levites and singers, and gives Solomon the plans. The book ends with David's prayer of praise, "Thine, O LORD, is the greatness" (1 Chronicles 29:11).
