What is the Book of Nehemiah about?
Nehemiah is the sixteenth book of the Bible. Nehemiah was cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia (Nehemiah 1:11). When he hears that Jerusalem's walls are broken down and its gates burned, he weeps, fasts and prays. The king notices his sad face and gives him leave and letters to go and rebuild (Nehemiah 2:1–8).
In Jerusalem, Nehemiah inspects the walls by night and organizes the people to build, each family working on its own section. Sanballat and Tobiah mock and threaten them, so the builders work with one hand and hold a weapon with the other (Nehemiah 4:17). The wall is finished in fifty-two days (Nehemiah 6:15). Then Ezra reads the law aloud to the gathered people, who weep until they are told, "the joy of the LORD is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10). The people renew their covenant, and Nehemiah works to restore the sabbath and the temple service.
