What is the Book of Job about?

Job is the eighteenth book of the Bible. It tells of a man in the land of Uz who was "perfect and upright" and feared God (Job 1:1). Satan claims Job serves God only because he has been blessed, so God allows him to be tested. In one day Job loses his wealth and all ten children, yet he says, "the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD" (Job 1:21). Then he is struck with painful boils.

His friends Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar come to comfort him but insist he is suffering for some sin. Job holds to his innocence declaring, "I know that my redeemer liveth" (Job 19:25). At last God answers out of the whirlwind: "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?" (Job 38:4). Job humbles himself, prays for his friends, and the Lord gives him twice as much as before (Job 42:10).
