What is the Book of Leviticus about?
Leviticus is the third book of the Bible. It picks up where Exodus ends, with the Lord speaking to Moses from the tabernacle (Leviticus 1:1). The first chapters describe the offerings: burnt offerings, peace offerings, sin offerings and trespass offerings. Aaron and his sons are then set apart as priests, and fire from the Lord consumes the first sacrifice (Leviticus 9:24). Soon after, Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu die for offering strange fire (Leviticus 10:1–2).
Other chapters teach about clean and unclean food, skin disease and purification. Chapter 16 describes the Day of Atonement, when the high priest entered the holy place and a scapegoat was sent into the wilderness bearing the people's sins (Leviticus 16:21–22). The book repeats God's call, "ye shall be holy; for I am holy" (Leviticus 11:44), and includes the command "thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Leviticus 19:18). It also sets out the yearly feasts, the sabbath year and the year of jubilee.
