What is the Book of Judges about?

Judges is the seventh book of the Bible. It covers the years after Joshua's death, before Israel had a king. The book follows a repeating pattern: the people do evil and serve other gods, enemies oppress them, they cry to the Lord, and He raises up a judge to deliver them (Judges 2:16–19).

Among the judges are Ehud, who killed Eglon king of Moab, and Deborah, who led Israel with Barak against Sisera (Judges 4:4–9). Gideon defeated the Midianites with only three hundred men (Judges 7:7). Jephthah made a rash vow, and Samson, a Nazarite of great strength, was betrayed by Delilah and died bringing down the house of Dagon on the Philistines (Judges 16:30). The book closes with dark stories of a nation adrift, summed up in its final line: "every man did that which was right in his own eyes" (Judges 21:25).
