What is the Book of 2 Samuel about?
2 Samuel is the tenth book of the Bible and tells the story of King David's reign. After mourning Saul and Jonathan, David is anointed king over Judah in Hebron and later over all Israel (2 Samuel 5:3). He takes Jerusalem and brings the ark of God there, dancing before the Lord with all his might (2 Samuel 6:14). God promises David that his house and kingdom will be established forever (2 Samuel 7:16).
David shows kindness to Jonathan's son Mephibosheth. But he sins with Bathsheba and arranges the death of her husband Uriah. The prophet Nathan confronts him with a parable and the words, "Thou art the man" (2 Samuel 12:7). Trouble follows in David's family, and his son Absalom leads a revolt, ending when his head is caught in an oak (2 Samuel 18:9). The book closes with David's song of praise and his purchase of a threshing floor for an altar.
