Who was King Saul?
Saul, the son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin, was Israel's first king. He was a choice young man, taller than anyone else from his shoulders upward (1 Samuel 9:2). While searching for his father's lost donkeys, he met the prophet Samuel, who anointed him with oil (1 Samuel 10:1). Saul led Israel to victory over the Ammonites at Jabesh-gilead and was made king at Gilgal.
Saul's reign was marked by disobedience. He offered a burnt offering instead of waiting for Samuel, and later spared King Agag and the best of the Amalekite animals, so God rejected him as king (1 Samuel 15:23). He grew jealous of David and tried to kill him with a javelin (1 Samuel 18:11). Before his last battle he consulted a woman with a familiar spirit at Endor, and he died on Mount Gilboa along with his sons (1 Samuel 31:6).
