Who was Jonathan?

Jonathan was a son of King Saul and a brave warrior. With only his armor bearer, he climbed up to a Philistine garrison, trusting that "there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few" (1 Samuel 14:6). Later that day he unknowingly broke his father's oath by tasting honey, and the people saved him from being put to death.

After David killed Goliath, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and he gave David his robe, sword and bow (1 Samuel 18:1–4). When Saul tried to kill David, Jonathan warned his friend with arrows shot in a field as a signal (1 Samuel 20:35–42). Jonathan died with his father on Mount Gilboa, and David mourned him in a lament, saying his love was wonderful (2 Samuel 1:26). David later showed kindness to Jonathan's son Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9:7).
