Who was King Josiah?
Josiah became king of Judah when he was only eight years old and reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. He did what was right in the sight of the Lord and did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left (2 Kings 22:1–2). In the eighteenth year of his reign, while the temple was being repaired, Hilkiah the high priest found the book of the law. When it was read to Josiah, he tore his clothes (2 Kings 22:8–11).
Josiah gathered the people and made a covenant to follow the Lord. He removed the idols, burned the vessels made for Baal, and broke down the altar at Bethel, as a prophet had foretold long before, naming him (1 Kings 13:2). He kept a Passover like none since the days of the judges (2 Kings 23:22). Josiah died after being wounded by archers in battle against Pharaoh Necho at Megiddo (2 Chronicles 35:23–24).
