Who was Mary, the mother of Jesus?
Mary was a virgin living in Nazareth of Galilee, engaged to Joseph of the house of David, when the angel Gabriel told her she would conceive by the Holy Ghost and bear a son named Jesus (Luke 1:26–35). She answered, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord" (Luke 1:38). She visited her cousin Elisabeth and praised God in the song often called the Magnificat (Luke 1:46–55). In Bethlehem she gave birth to Jesus and laid Him in a manger (Luke 2:7).
When Jesus was twelve, Mary and Joseph found Him in the temple among the teachers, and she kept all these sayings in her heart (Luke 2:46–51). At the wedding in Cana she told the servants, "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it" (John 2:5). She stood near the cross, where Jesus placed her in the care of the disciple He loved (John 19:25–27). After the ascension she was praying with the apostles in Jerusalem (Acts 1:14).
