What is the Book of Joel about?

Joel is the twenty-ninth book of the Bible. The prophet Joel, the son of Pethuel, begins by describing a terrible plague of locusts that has stripped the land. Vines, fig trees and fields are ruined, and the offerings at the house of the Lord have stopped. Joel sees in it a warning of the coming day of the Lord.

He calls the people to fast and to turn to God with all their heart: "rend your heart, and not your garments" (Joel 2:13). God answers with a promise to restore "the years that the locust hath eaten" (Joel 2:25). Then comes the famous promise, "I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh" (Joel 2:28), which Peter quoted on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:16–17). Joel adds that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be delivered (Joel 2:32). The book ends with the nations judged and a promise of blessing for Judah (Joel 3:18).
