Who was Judas Iscariot?

Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, was one of the twelve apostles Jesus chose (John 6:71). In the lists of the twelve he is named last, as the one who betrayed Jesus (Matthew 10:4). He kept the money bag for the group, and John says he was a thief who complained when Mary anointed Jesus with costly ointment (John 12:4–6). He went to the chief priests and agreed to hand Jesus over for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14–16).

At the Last Supper Jesus said that one of them would betray Him and gave Judas the sop (John 13:26). In Gethsemane Judas came with a crowd carrying swords and staves and betrayed Jesus with a kiss (Matthew 26:47–49). When he saw that Jesus was condemned, he brought back the silver, threw it down in the temple and hanged himself (Matthew 27:3–5). Matthias was later chosen to take his place (Acts 1:26).
