What is the Book of Zechariah about?

Zechariah is the thirty-eighth book of the Bible. Zechariah the son of Berechiah began to prophesy in the second year of King Darius (Zechariah 1:1), encouraging the Jews who had returned from Babylon to rebuild the temple. In a series of night visions he sees a man among myrtle trees, four horns, a flying roll and a golden candlestick fed by two olive trees. With that vision comes the word to Zerubbabel, "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts" (Zechariah 4:6).

The later chapters look ahead. Zion's king comes "lowly, and riding upon an ass" (Zechariah 9:9), words the Gospels connect with Jesus entering Jerusalem. The prophet's wages are weighed out as thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12), and the people look upon "me whom they have pierced" (Zechariah 12:10). The book ends with the Lord as king over all the earth (Zechariah 14:9).
