What is the Book of Amos about?
Amos is the thirtieth book of the Bible. Amos was among the herdmen of Tekoa, in Judah, sent to prophesy to the northern kingdom of Israel (Amos 1:1). He told the priest Amaziah that he was not a prophet by trade but "an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit" (Amos 7:14).
The book begins with judgments on the nations around Israel, then turns to Israel itself. Amos condemns those who sell the poor for a pair of shoes (Amos 2:6), live in luxury and keep feasts while ignoring injustice. God says He hates such feasts and calls instead, "let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream" (Amos 5:24). Amos sees visions of locusts, fire, a plumbline and a basket of summer fruit. He warns of a famine "of hearing the words of the LORD" (Amos 8:11). The book ends with a promise that God will raise up the fallen tabernacle of David (Amos 9:11).
