What is the Book of Lamentations about?

Lamentations is the twenty-fifth book of the Bible. It is a set of five poems mourning the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon. The book opens with the city pictured as a lonely widow: "How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people!" (Lamentations 1:1). The poems describe the ruined temple, starving children, princes taken captive and enemies who mock.

Four of the five chapters are written as acrostics, with each verse or group of verses beginning with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The writer admits that the disaster came because of the people's sin (Lamentations 1:8). Yet in the middle of the book is a turn toward hope: "his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22–23). The final poem is a prayer asking God to remember His people, with the plea, "Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD" (Lamentations 5:21).
