On the night He was betrayed, Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples, giving them the bread and the cup (Matthew 26:26–28). He prayed in Gethsemane and was betrayed by Judas. Peter denied Him three times before the cock crowed (Luke 22:61). Jesus stood before the high priest and before Pilate, and was crucified at Calvary between two criminals (Luke 23:33). On the cross He said, "It is finished" (John 19:30), and Joseph of Arimathaea laid His body in a new tomb.
Early on the first day of the week, the women came to the tomb and found the stone rolled away. The angel said, "He is not here: for he is risen" (Matthew 28:6). Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene, to the disciples, and to Thomas, who said, "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28). Paul writes that Christ died for our sins and rose again the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
