Who was Gideon?
Gideon was a judge of Israel at a time when the Midianites raided the land at every harvest. The angel of the Lord found him threshing wheat by the winepress to hide it and told him, "The LORD is with thee" (Judges 6:11–12). Gideon tore down his father's altar to Baal, and then asked God for a sign with a fleece of wool, first wet while the ground was dry and then dry while the ground was wet (Judges 6:36–40).
God cut Gideon's army from thousands down to three hundred men, chosen by the way they drank water (Judges 7:7). At night they surrounded the Midianite camp with trumpets and lamps hidden inside empty pitchers, then broke the pitchers and cried, "The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon" (Judges 7:20). The enemy fled in confusion. Afterward Gideon refused to be king, saying that the Lord would rule over them (Judges 8:23).
