What is the Book of 1 Peter about?
1 Peter is a letter from the apostle Peter to believers scattered through Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia (1 Peter 1:1). Many of them were facing hard times. Peter reminds them that God has given them a lively hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:3), and that their faith, tried by fire, is more precious than gold.
He calls believers a chosen generation and a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), and tells them to live so well that those who speak against them are put to silence. He speaks to servants, wives and husbands, and points to Christ, who suffered for us and left an example. Near the end he tells them to cast all their care upon God, "for he careth for you" (1 Peter 5:7), and warns that the devil walks about as a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8).
