What is the Book of Hebrews about?
Hebrews is a New Testament letter written to encourage believers to hold fast to their faith in Jesus. It opens by saying that God, who spoke in times past by the prophets, has now spoken by his Son (Hebrews 1:1–2). The letter shows Jesus as greater than the angels and greater than Moses, and presents him as a high priest after the order of Melchisedec (Hebrews 5:6) who offered himself once for all.
The writer explains the new covenant promised through Jeremiah (Hebrews 8:8) and compares the earthly tabernacle with the true one in heaven. Chapter 11 is known as the faith chapter. It begins, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for" (Hebrews 11:1), and lists Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Rahab and many others. Readers are then urged to run with patience the race set before them, looking unto Jesus (Hebrews 12:1–2).
