Who were Adam and Eve?
Adam and Eve were the first man and woman. God formed Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (Genesis 2:7), then put him in the garden of Eden to tend it. Adam could eat from every tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Because it was not good for the man to be alone, God made a woman from one of his ribs (Genesis 2:21–22).
The serpent persuaded the woman to eat the forbidden fruit, and she gave some to her husband (Genesis 3:6). Their eyes were opened, they hid from God, and they were sent out of the garden, with cherubims and a flaming sword guarding the way to the tree of life (Genesis 3:24). Adam named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living. Their sons included Cain, Abel and Seth (Genesis 4:25), and Adam lived 930 years (Genesis 5:5).
