Who was Jacob?

Jacob was the younger twin son of Isaac and Rebekah, born holding his brother Esau's heel. He bought Esau's birthright for a meal of red pottage (Genesis 25:29–34) and, with his mother's help, tricked his nearly blind father into giving him Esau's blessing. Fleeing from Esau's anger, he dreamed of a ladder reaching to heaven with angels going up and down on it (Genesis 28:12).

In Haran Jacob worked seven years for Rachel, but her father Laban gave him Leah first, so he served seven more (Genesis 29:20–28). He had twelve sons, who became the fathers of the tribes of Israel. On his way home he wrestled with a man until daybreak and was renamed Israel (Genesis 32:28). He made peace with Esau, grieved for Joseph, and at the end of his life went down to Egypt, where he blessed his sons before he died (Genesis 49:33).
